The problem

JOLT runs electric vehicle chargers across Australia, and its app is how drivers find one, start a charge and pay. After launch on iPhone and Android, drivers found it hard to use. Finding a nearby charger, choosing the right plug and starting a session took too many confusing steps, and a driver who can't charge is a driver who doesn't come back. The app also needed room for advertising, an important part of JOLT's business.

Our process

Step 1

Six journeys audited

We split the app into the six paths drivers use most and checked each against best practice.

The end result

Drivers now have a clear path from map to charge: find a nearby charger, pick the right plug, watch the charge at a glance, and get a receipt when they leave. Every screen is built from one design system based on JOLT's brand, with colour contrast checked to accessibility standards so text stays easy to read. JOLT's team got signed-off designs, a design system their developers can keep building on, and space in the app for advertisers.

Every tap, audited

We walked through the app the way a driver would, screen by screen, across the six journeys that matter most. Each step was checked against proven usability rules, so we could show JOLT exactly where drivers got stuck and why.

Fixes that pay their way

With a tight timeline, we focused on changes that did two jobs: made charging simpler for drivers, and created space for advertising in and around the app, which helps keep JOLT's business running.

A brand, rebuilt for the phone

JOLT's brand guidelines were made for banners and logos. We turned them into an app design system: colours with clear states and contrast, type that reads on a small screen, and one spacing grid across every device.

Signed off and ready to build

Final screens showed exactly how each part of the app behaves, not just how it looks. Every design was checked for colour accessibility and added to the design system, so JOLT's developers had one source of truth.
